Mining association blasts new coal dust standards The head of the National Mining Association said Wednesday new standards lowering the amount of coal dust in underground coal mines are unscientific and do nothing to protect miners. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration drafted the standards in response to a rise in black lung disease among coal miners in Appalachian states. But NMA CEO Hal Quinn argues the new standards create a "one-size-fits-all" approach inappropriate for the mining industry since black lung has been on the decline in other parts of the country.
